I've decided to make this blog all about stories. Because I am all about stories. I do a lot of things, such as artwork, music, writing, etc. But when I boil everything away, it all comes down to stories.
That's why I really like Pixar. They believe in stories, too. Disney used to believe in stories (though hopefully that has changed, now that they've bought Pixar), but for a long time, now, they've been more about making money from families with little kids. Hence the really bad sequels that were made for video only. Horrible stories, badly thought out. Badly drawn, too, but if there had been a good story behind the bad drawing, I may have tolerated the bad drawing. Maybe. It was pretty hard to see, for instance, the magic carpet from Aladdin go from a beautifully rich textile to a hand-drawn rag. I mean, sure, it probably would have cost more than the sequels warranted. But then, everything about the sequels probably cost more than the sequels warranted.
To date, Pixar has only come out with one sequel, Toy Story 2 (I turn a blind eye to the poorly animated 2D adventure about Buzz Lightyear). That sequel was better than the first movie, because once again, the Pixar people paid enough attention to the story. Yes, some of their movies have been better than others, but the attention to story is still there. That's why Pixar movies work. If the Pixar people turned to other media, they would probably still produce hit successes--because they know about making story work.
So where is all this going? I've decided that the fastest way to get into story-making myself is to go strike out on my own. Form my own company. Probably I'll have to get a day job. Probably I'll have to do plenty of grunt work, especially while I learn to put everything together into animations. But hey, story is what I do. Story is what I love. And stories can change the world.
